CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona) was born as a cultural centre dedicated to the urban city. Founded in 1994 following the return of democracy to Spain and the Olympics in 1992, CCCB celebrated its 30th birthday in 2024. Originally founded as a complex for contemporary culture in Casa de Caritat, a 12thcentury convent in Barcelona’s Raval neighbourhood, the CCCB has expanded over the years and in 2011 architects Elías Torres and Martínez Lapeña restored the Casa de Caridad theatre to create the CCCB Theater. The Hidden Story of J. P. Morgan’s Librarian

Image
Belle da Costa Greene, a brilliant archivist, buried her own history. A Although he left no comprehensive statement about his passion for collecting, I think that, like most students of art, Morgan collected as a way of dreaming through the dreams of others—the artists and artisans who produced the powerful works he bought, including Byzantine enamels, Italian Renaissance paintings, three Gutenberg Bibles, and an autographed manuscript of Mark Twain’s “Pudd’nhead Wilson,” purchased directly from the author. Like the legendary collectors William Randolph Hearst and Andy Warhol, Morgan was self-conscious about some of his physical qualities: he suffered from rosacea, which got worse as he aged. The beauty of art was something to hide behind. And it could be nourishing to his countrymen, too. Morgan was the president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1904 until his death, and he knew that the works he acquired on his trips to Europe and North Africa could expand America’s unde...

Art that flows between the rivers and into the sea

Thoughtful, literary exhibition gathers works by 12 artists from across the globe Between Rivers: A Curatorial Journey Rivers, like mountains, are places of the imagination as much as they are facts of geography and political history. In the introduction to his 2014 book Congo: The Epic History of a People , Belgian historian David van Reybrouck acknowledges this duality — let’s call it the magical actuality of rivers — in relation to Central Africa’s greatest river. The Congo, tells Van Reybrouck, has a resonance that far exceeds its 4 700km length. The basin where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean is an enigma of colour: a yellowish, ochre, rusty broth, he writes, that stretches westward for 800km during the rainy months: “That is how a country begins: far before the coastline, thinned down with lots and lots of seawater.” Curator Owen Martin was still living in Cape Town — a place of epic mountains but meh rivers — when he read Van Rey...
